Right Decisions, Right Now - Hello Again Old Friend!
Guess what? Right Decisions, Right Now is still going strong and has some awesome new FREE resources to help teachers in grades 5-9 deliver quality learning experiences for students to steer clear of tobacco. The lessons are available in multiple platforms including web-based, PDF download, or a print kit that can be delivered to your school. One great feature is that the lessons are sequenced by grade level so a middle school health teacher can scaffold the lessons each year with their health classes. Thus, the teacher can still address the topic during each of those crucial middle school years without duplicating lessons or learning experiences. Lessons contain a variety of activities like surveys, evaluation of consequences, interpersonal skills scenarios, and even a summative assessment! Beginning teachers will appreciate the well-designed and ready-made plans that will address health standards. Veteran teachers can use the lessons or utilize parts to enhance lessons that they already have in place.
Not only does Right Decisions, Right Now provide great lesson plans, they also have a plethora of resources for use by teachers. One of the newest are the downloadable Smart Board activities for each grade level. Posters, brochures, infographics, and videos are available to download free of charge. The videos are some of my favorite resources included. Each video is short (roughly 3-4 minutes), but also includes a teacher guide for the video and discussion starters to assist in generating student driven discussions about tobacco, peer pressure, and related topics. Parents are not left out of Right Decisions, Right Now either! There is an entire section devoted to parents with resources and a guide on how to initiate the discussion with their teen about smoking and tobacco use. Students will hear our message at school and also receive the same consistent message at home!
